Hong Kong Disneyland Resort (HKDL) announced today a new program called “YOUth Power” that will provide more than 200 children from the Sham Shui Po district with sports and creativity training this summer. The program aims at helping the children fulfill their dreams by broadening their horizons and building up their self-esteem.

“By supporting this new program, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort hopes to help children in Shum Shui Po develop healthy hobbies and build their physical and inner strength by embracing new challenges,” said Linda Choy, Vice President of Public Affairs, HKDL, “We will also provide training in storytelling and animation to further develop their social skills and nurture well-rounded development.”

Reaching dreams together through coaching and mentoring

HKDL has always been committed to Hong Kong and the communities it serves, and YOUth Power is just one of the ways the resort delivers on that commitment.

Through the YOUth Power program, active and retired local athletes under the “Sports Legacy” scheme will provide two months of training for participants, with guidance ranging from basic physical fitness to different sports techniques and encouragement to build their self-esteem. The athletes include Yeung Chui-ling, Hong Kong Fencing Team Representative; Cheuk Woon-yee, Hong Kong Baseball Team Representative; Wong Chun-yu, former Hong Kong Football Team Representative and Eastern Football Team Assistant Coach; Yuen Siu-lun, former Hong Kong Karatedo Representative; and Kevin Or, Hong Kong Shuttlecock Team Representative.

“YOUth Power is the first community program outside of school campuses to launch since ‘Sports Legacy’ was established four years ago,” said Herman Hu, Vice President of the SF&OC Hong Kong, China. “We aim to help retired athletes continue their careers outside the sports arena and make good use of their expertise. They can also share their experience with the youth and search for potential sports talents.”

Beginning from July, the program will offer a series of activities, including half-day and full-day training courses, workshops and sharing sections by sports ambassadors.

Helping children develop their creative potential

In addition to sports training, there will also be creativity training including animation and creative storytelling.

“Storytelling is all around us, and there is no better place to be immersed in the art of storytelling than Hong Kong Disneyland!” added Linda Choy.

Through magical attractions, storybook settings and musical backdrops, the children will discover the art of storytelling and experience how these elements come together in a performance of their own creation. They will also discover the history, creativity, and innovation behind the creative process of animation.

More than 200 children are expected to benefit from this program. After successfully completing the program, they will receive a certificate of commendation as a reward. This program will make a real difference to the community according to Elli Fu, CEO and Founder of J-life Foundation, a charity mainly serving grassroots families in Sham Shui Po. “Children from underprivileged families need more encouragement and opportunities to develop their self-esteem. This joint program can broaden their horizons, discover their abilities and pursue unlimited possibilities for development,” she said.

After a kick-off ceremony, the children learned to draw Star Wars character BB-8 and enjoyed the “Star Wars™: Tomorrowland Takeover” just launched at HKDL, featuring special first-of-a-kind experiences in Asia.

About “Sports Legacy” Scheme

The “Sports Legacy” Scheme (Scheme) is an interactive platform for both students, planning to retire and retired athletes to pursue their dreams in sports. With great support from the HKSAR Government, strategic partners and sponsors, participating schools, National Sports Association and their respective athletes, Hong Kong Athletes Career and Education Programme (HKACEP) under the auspices of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) launched the Scheme to provide students with systematic sports-specific training and skill practices under the professional instructions by athlete coaches, in order to identify talented students for further sports-related career development. By adopting a long-term systematic training programme, the Scheme aimed to promote the spirit of Olympism so as to assist students in character building through the diffusion of positive value of sports, also to enhance students’ overall sporting performance and sporting culture in schools. Apart from providing sports-specific training, the Scheme comprises sports-related fitness training and sports-related career guidance. Besides, under the HKACEP scholarship programme, athlete coaches can pursue continuing education and vocational training leading to a bright post-athletic career transformation.
